The “Old Castle” of Hollenstedt is located about 1.5 kilometers south of Hollenstedt in the plain tract of the river Este. You can still see the traces of a circular hill fort with an 80 meter diameter and trenches off the wall. Originally, the wall was eight meters wide and up to four meters high, consisted of a wooden structure which was covered on both sides by sod. Casemates were built on the reverse, i.e. protected vaults against enemy fire. Inside the wall were several buildings. The castle was built in the late eighth century and existed for only a few decades.
The present form of the hill fort is based on a reconstruction from 1980 and gives an impression of what the construction may have looked like originally.
