Founded at the end of the 17th century, the Jewish cemetery in Harburg is over 300 years old. Its small size belies its regional significance: for a long time it was a grave lot for the Jewish communities in Harburg, Winsen, Tostedt and Lüneburg. The tour explores some of the 239 surviving tombstones that tell stories about the members of the synagogue congregations. On this fiel trip you will find graves that are laid out in a traditional way, but also a new Jewish grave culture, which since the 19th century endeavors to approximate municipal cemeteries.
