The Harburg Kulturtag at the Archaeological Museum Hamburg

The Harburg Kulturtag (“culture day”) in the autumn of each year has become an integral part of the lively art and culture scene in Hamburg. This year it takes place for the 16th time. On Sunday, the 3rd of November, from 12.00 to 20.00 all important cultural institutions from Harburg present themselves here. More than 20 institutions offer culture lovers the opportunity to enjoy a specially tailored program for just € 3.

The Archaeological Museum Hamburg has prepared a large participation programme for the brand-new exhibition “hot stuff – Archaeology of Everyday Life”. In the exhibition, visitors encounter this hot stuff, things that were only recently a must-have and today are admired by children and young people in disbelief: “You had no Internet, no Wikipedia, no cell phones?!” From today’s perspective this is unimaginable and yet not long ago. Discovering, remembering, telling: hot stuff invites you to become a museum guide yourself, to meet familiar objects from your own past and to exchange personal memories. Who better to convey the feeling of life of our recent past to the younger generation than the parents and grandparents – many stations invite you to touch, to try out, to listen and to be amazed. This hot stuff will not only make the hearts of nostalgics beat faster!

hot stuff – Let’s Have Fun!
The improvisational German comedy duo Charlotte and Ralf give guided tours through the new exhibition “hot stuff – Archaeology of Everyday Life”

This way visitors have never experienced the Archaeological Museum Hamburg: Has the Walkman not just been all the rage? Was the 386 computer really up to date 30 years ago? And they saved everything on disks? Did not my last cellphone have keys? What is still hot stuff today will look like a relic from the Stone Age tomorrow. Embark on a search for traces back into your youth: with the exhibition “hot stuff – Archaeology of Everyday Life”, the Archaeological Museum Hamburg is celebrating a revival of the 70s to the 2000s. The improvisational comedy duo Charlotte and Ralf take you on a journey through time into this era and let you immerse yourself in your own youth memories. In this guided tour the comedians, who are also the creative minds behind the French cultural reporter “Alfons”, let themselves become inspired to many colourful scenes by the new exhibition that will also involve the audience.

Archaeology  – hot stuff!
hot stuff tour through the archaeological permanent exhibition

All things new? The half-life of technology, fashion and design is shorter today than ever. When did this trend begin? Was it even thousands of years ago that the parent’s status of technology felt almost “Stone Age” for the offspring? On a fascinating tour through the ages, visitors will be introduced to the world of today through insights into the past. Millennia-old objects represent the civilization progress of past cultures and at the same time span the cultural change from the Stone Age to the present.
