Google Arts & Culture is a free online site by Google. The project started 2011 with about 1.000 pieces of art from museums like the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. Some great German museums are part of the project as well, like the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin.
Each year the photographs of the Archaeological Museum Hamburg receive more than 80,000 hits, most of them from the US. More than 35,000 users took a virtual tour via Google Arts & Culture. “We hope of course that a real visit follows after the digital one. Participating in the online project means a worldwide opening of the museum. You can inform yourself about our objects in every country on Earth”, says Dr. Michael Merkel, in charge of the museum’s collection and project coordinator.
