The special Christmas gift: Christmas shopping in the Archaeological Museum Hamburg and City Museum Harburg

In a few weeks Christmas is coming! Just in time for the Advent season, the Archaeological Museum Hamburg and City Museum Harburg have again put together a colorful Christmas offer. For those who do not yet have presents for their loved ones, the museum offers a real shopping alternative. This year, the museum features two special pieces connected to Harburg: the famous and for the first time digitally colored Harburg view by Merian as well as the new publication, which has just been released for the 120th museum birthday. And at the traditional Harburg Christmas market, the museum is again represented with a hands-on programme.

The museum shop offers just the right thing for every taste and budget. The assortment includes not only an extensive collection of books, exhibition catalogues and fascinating jewelry replicas but also gift ideas around the current exhibition “Margiana”. A wide range of products that has already brought many a gift search to a successful conclusion. Christmas shopping in the museum also offers a big advantage: it can also be bought on Sundays! The shop is also accessible independently of a museum visit. The museum’s offer this year is also a treasure trove for Harburg fans.

Harburg has never been seen like this: the famous Harburg panorama of Merian is surprisingly modern

It is well known to Harburg citizens: the famous Harburg view by Caspar Merian from 1654. The extremely representative, almost one meter wide copper engraving was previously seen only in black and white optics. In a Europe-wide unique pilot project of the City Museum Harburg, it was now digitally colored for the first time and thus brought back to life in a photo-realistic way. The colored Merian can be bought in the format 90 x 40 cm at the museum shop as a print on high-quality Hahnemühlen paper for 49 euros, as a photographic print on an aluminum dibond plate for 169 euros and as high-quality printing behind acrylic glass with a wooden frame for 299 euros. Special offer: from 21st to 25th November the museum celebrates its 120th birthday. During this time, you will get the publication “Die Harburger Schloßstraße” for free when you buy a Merian on Alu-Dibond plate or behind acrylic glass.

Archaeological Museum Hamburg and City Museum Harburg present new publication: “120 years of the Archaeological Museum Hamburg, City Museum Harburg, Helms Museum”

This year marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of today’s “Archaeological Museum Hamburg and City Museum Harburg”. Just in time, the house has published the new museum publication “120 Years of the Archaeological Museum Hamburg, City Museum Harburg, Helms Museum”. The book offers a chronology from its beginnings in 1898 to the present and honors the eventful history of the museum with many interesting facts and previously unpublished images. The book is available in the museum shop from 21st November and can be purchased for 24.80 Euro.

The Archaeological Museum Hamburg at the Harburg Christmas Market

Halfway to Christmas, there’s an important event: the Harburg Christmas Market! Starting 22nd November it gets you in the right mood for the most magical time of the year and also this year the Archaeological Museum Hamburg takes the visitors of the market again on a discovery tour. In front of the illuminated Harburg Town Hall, especially the little Christmas market visitors can look forward to a free offer:

Fire & stone

At the hands-on station, the children go on a journey back to the Stone Age. They make tools out of flint and learn about the technique of Stone Age fire production. They are shown how the sparks fly when flint and fool’s gold meet and make the tinder glow.

Date: Saturday, 08.12.2018, 15.00 to 17.00

Bag Workshop

At the hands-on station, the children go on a journey through time and make a bag out of colourful felt fabrics. The fabrics are cut with spring scissors, the holes are pierced with bone awls. Then all left to do is pull the string through the hole and the bag is ready, which the children can wear well on the belt.

Date: Thursday, 29.11. and 29.12.2018, 16.00-17.30

The offers take place on the stage of the Harburg Christmas market and are free of charge.

Vouchers for the museum

And another idea from the museum shop: Santa Claus also likes to give away an exciting journey of discovery through the museum in the form of a voucher for a museum visit or an individual group tour.

Feel free to browse the museum in a relaxed atmosphere for Christmas presents until Sunday, 23rd December, daily (Tues.-Sun.) from 10 to 17 o’clock.
